Selling My Car Privately
It is important to protect yourself from crime when selling your vehicle as a thief could pose as a buyer. Here are a few things to bear in mind:
- Do not let the potential purchaser go out on test drive alone – they might not come back!
- Do not leave the potential purchaser alone with the keys in the ignition
- If you are taking a cheque or bankers draft as payment, do not part with the vehicle until you are happy that the payment is genuine. If you are in any doubt about this contact your bank.
If you sell your vehicle privately or through a motor trader remember to tell the DVLA. If you fail to advise them you may be held responsible for future motoring offences. You can advise them by filling out the registration certificate V5 and sending it to the address provided on the direct.gov website.
