What are the rules around seat belt use?
You need to wear a seat belt at all times if one is fitted in the vehicle you are driving. There are a few exceptions to this;
- If you are in an emergency services vehicle – police, fire or rescue service
- Driving a goods vehicle on deliveries if you are travelling no more than 50 metres between stops
- If you are reversing, or supervising a learner driver who is reversing
- You are a passenger in a trade vehicle and you are investigating a fault
You could also be exempt from wearing a seat belt due to medical conditions. If this is the case your Doctor will have issued you with a "Certificate of Exemption from Compulsory Seat Belt Wearing". You will need to advise your car insurance company if this is the case.
